Help with DiamVAT, DiamLaw and DiamMath.

Last updated: September 2026

This page lists the system requirements for each app and answers the questions we are asked most often – above all about backing up your data and about iCloud sync. If your question is not covered here, please write to us via the contact page. DiamApps is a very small studio: you are always writing to a person, just not around the clock.

DiamVAT

Checking, recording and preparing VAT returns

DiamVAT checks Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummern (German VAT identification numbers) against the register held by the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (the Federal Central Tax Office). Every check is documented as a PDF, and the app prepares the Zusammenfassende Meldung (EC Sales List), the Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung (advance VAT return) and the annual VAT return.

Devices
iPhone, iPad and Mac – one app from one project.
System version
iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26 and later. Older systems are not supported.
Mac only
The official confirmation check and the transmission to ELSTER (the German tax authorities’ online filing system) run through the tax administration’s ERiC interface – in this version solely as a test submission to the tax administration’s test system. That interface exists for desktop systems only, which is why these steps are available in the Mac version alone.
Version
1.23.3 (beta). The app is still in testing and is not yet on the App Store.

How do I back up my data?

Every check produces a PDF record that you can file and archive; batch checks additionally give you a summary report and a CSV export. Submission records are deliberately immutable: they survive the deletion of a draft and even “Delete all local data”, because proof of a transmission has to be kept. For your day-to-day records, iCloud sync is the way to have your data on more than one device.

What happens when iCloud sync is switched on?

Your check history, imports, EC Sales List entries, drafts, companies and your appearance and navigation settings are kept in step between your devices through your personal iCloud. Four things deliberately stay on the device: the app icon, the certificate PIN, the active company and the selected EC Sales List reporting period. DiamApps runs no server of its own for this and sees none of it. When you switch sync on, the app says explicitly that sensitive company data travels with it and waits for your consent.

Why can I not file from my iPhone?

Because the official ERiC interface exists for desktop systems only. iPhone and iPad let you record and calculate everything, run the checks in advance and produce the forms as PDFs. The draft then travels to your Mac via iCloud, and that is where transmission takes place – in this version solely as a test submission to the tax administration’s test system.

Can I already file a legally effective return?

No. The current beta only ever sends to the tax administration’s test endpoint; the program contains no path for live transmission at all. Filing with legal effect is therefore deliberately impossible in this version.

Where do I find instructions?

Under “Help” in the app there are eight step-by-step guides – from the simple and the qualified check through bulk checking to a finished Zusammenfassende Meldung – plus two short screen recordings taken from the app.

My question is not answered here

Write to us via the contact page and please name “DiamVAT” as the app in question. Never send us your ELSTER certificate, a PIN or real tax data – we do not need any of that to track down a problem.

DiamLaw

Reading legislation and case law

DiamLaw is a reader for German federal legislation and EU law that works entirely offline – with highlights, notes, dossiers, a study mode and a connection to the case law of the federal courts.

Devices
iPhone and iPad.
System version
iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 and later.
Mac
There is no separate native Mac version. On Macs with Apple silicon you can install the iPad version.
Version
0.7.2. The app is still in development and not yet on the App Store.

Do I need an internet connection?

Not for the legislation – it sits complete on your device, including search, highlights and study mode. Only case law needs a connection, because the decisions are fetched from the German federal legal information portal. Once a decision has been opened or saved as an offline copy, it stays readable without a connection.

How do I back up my data?

The backup writes your data into a local file that you put wherever you like – in the Files app, in iCloud Drive or anywhere else. When you move to a new device, you simply read that same file back in. If you use iCloud sync, you also have the same state on iPhone and iPad.

What happens when iCloud sync is switched on?

Three separate switches let you decide what travels: content (highlights, notes, favourites, dossiers, offline decisions), appearance and settings, and images. Everything stays in your personal iCloud; DiamApps runs no servers of its own and cannot look at any of it. A status line in the settings shows whether the connection is up.

How current are the legal texts?

Because the texts deliberately live on your device, new versions arrive with the next app update rather than overnight. The change notice tells you that something has happened to a piece of legislation – it does not yet deliver the new wording. DiamLaw is also not an official edition and is no substitute for legal advice; only the version promulgated in the Bundesgesetzblatt (Federal Law Gazette) is binding.

Why can I not find my state law?

The app covers federal legislation and selected EU legal acts. State law, administrative regulations, decrees, commentaries and textbooks are expressly not included. Every source that is included can be looked up in the app together with its legal status and the date it was retrieved.

DiamMath

Plotting functions and doing the maths

DiamMath plots functions, analyses curves, solves systems of equations and shows surfaces in space. Everything is calculated on the device itself – no account, no internet connection.

Devices
iPhone, iPad and Mac. The Mac version adds menu commands and keyboard shortcuts.
System version
iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26 and later.
Orientation
On iPhone the app deliberately runs in portrait only; on iPad and Mac it works in every orientation and window size.
Version
0.7.21 (build 49), a development build. The polish for iPad and Mac is still to come, and the app is not yet on the App Store.

How do I back up my worksheets?

Under “Data & backup” in the settings, DiamMath writes everything into a single file: all settings, your profile including its photo, every background image, the quick-start list and every worksheet – even the ones in the bin. If you like, the backup goes straight to iCloud Drive.

Does importing overwrite my files?

No. When a backup is read in, settings and images are only replaced after you confirm. Worksheets are added under names that are still free and never overwrite an existing file.

What happens when iCloud sync is switched on?

Worksheets, the quick-start list, background images, your profile and all settings stay the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac – through your personal iCloud, with no third-party servers involved. If two devices change the same thing at once, the most recent change wins for each item individually. The version that loses is kept as a separate copy marked “(conflict …)”. That applies to worksheet files; for settings, the quick-start list and background images the most recent change simply wins.

Why does the app not find the roots of a circle?

With sideways curves and implicit relations such as x² + y² = 25, a single x belongs to two y values. Roots, extrema, the derivative, area calculation, crosshair readings and the value table are therefore deliberately disabled in those cases – any single result would be arbitrary.

Why does a change of language only take effect later?

Changing the language inside the app takes full effect only after you restart it. Your own content – block titles, worksheet names and notes – is not translated. It keeps the language you wrote it in.

My question is not answered here

Write to us via the contact page and please name “DiamMath” as the app in question. If it concerns a particular calculation, it helps us to have the expression exactly as you typed it.

Reporting a bug

What really helps us when something goes wrong

The more precise a report is, the better the chance of reproducing the problem – and only what can be reproduced can be fixed. These five details are usually all we need.

App and version

Which app is affected and which version you are using. You will find the number right at the bottom of the settings under “About” – please include the build number in brackets if one is shown.

Device and system version

For example “iPhone 17 Pro running iOS 26.1” or “MacBook Air M2 running macOS 26”. You will find both in the system settings under “General” or under “About This Mac”.

What exactly happened

The route that got you there, step by step: which area did you open, what did you tap, what had you entered? A screenshot often says more than a description.

What you expected instead

The most important point, and the one most often missing. “The number was wrong” tells us little – “it showed €12.40, but €12.04 would be correct” takes us straight to the cause.

How often it happens

Every time, just once, or only in a particular situation? If you can reproduce the problem on purpose, please tell us how – that is half the solution.

Where to send it

All of it together via the contact page. We will get back to you as soon as we have looked into it.

Please do not send us confidential data

To track down a problem we need no passwords, no PINs, no ELSTER certificate and no real client or tax data. Please redact details of that kind in screenshots before you send them. None of the apps uses an account with us – we have no access to your devices and cannot look anything up there.
